Indian Ocean Adventures at The Zanzibar Collection

21st June 2023

INDIAN OCEAN

A host of ocean adventures await you in the turquoise-blue waters of the Indian Ocean where the Zanzibar Collection hotels are situated. From the Water Club at Breezes Beach Club & Spa and Baraza Resort & Spa you can gear up with all the equipment you need to explore the sea.

Catch the wind and waves with a kitesurfing escapade. Kites are available at the "Water Club" and if you're new to the sport, our instructors are happy to get you started with beginner lessons. Hop into a kayak for a ride that even the kids can enjoy. And If easy sailing is your thing, cruise around the Indian Ocean on a Hobie Cat sailing boat. There are daily sailing lessons at the "Water Club," so come and learn some seamanship. When the tide is calm and the winds are gentle, this is the perfect opportunity to test your balancing skills with some stand-up paddle boarding.

DIVING

Zanzibar is one of the best locations for year-round scuba diving. The warm waters, good visibility and stunning marine life mean an unforgettable experience awaits you.

The Rising Sun Dive Centre at Breezes Beach Club & Spa is the only PADI 5-star Gold Palm and National Geographic Dive Centre in Zanzibar. Operating daily, Rising Sun is open to guests from all four Zanzibar Collection properties. Teenagers and children 8 years or older are welcome. We offer PADI scuba courses for beginners and learning groups are kept small for more tailored instruction. Polish up your diving skills with courses in PADI dive master-level, rescue diver, fish identification, open-water photography and more.

Then set off to explore the coral reefs, inhabited by sea turtles, dolphins, whales and over 400 species of fish. The lagoon dive sites of the south-east coast of Zanzibar are suitable for newbies and recent learners while experienced divers can try some open-sea diving. From the Rising Sun you can also take a private snorkeling boat trip up the coast. All our diving and ocean activities are carried out with the utmost safety and greatest consideration for marine life.

Alternatively, experience the magic of a sunset cruise on a Zanzibari dhow, a traditional wooden boat used for centuries to transport goods and people along the Swahili Coast. Ideal for beginners and people of all ages, the dhow sails into the ancient lagoon, a snorkellers' paradise for the colourful array of sea creatures. Our guides are very knowledgeable about marine life and can also teach you the traditional style of line fishing.

Did you know that Rising Sun's coral restoration project is working to restore degraded coral reefs? Since 2020 the dive team has been rebuilding the reef at dive sites and in the lagoon, using artificial structures that mimic a reef and coral rocks collected on land. Results of this citizen-science initiative are promising with new corals observed growing and different fish species frequenting the sites.

AWARD WINNING BEACH

The sandy white beaches are always calling and the low tourism density around the Zanzibar Collection hotels is an added attraction. So put on some sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses for some fun beach adventures.

Start the day with a brisk beach run or walk, invigorated by the fresh sea air. Explore the beautiful waterfront with a bike ride, a rewarding solo activity or time to bond as a family. Bicycles are available at the Water Club. Learn about juvenile marine life on a guided coral walk during low tide. Reef shoes are provided at the Water Club.

Get into the competitive spirit with a game of beach football, volleyball or tennis. A round of frisbee will renew your disc-flipping skills. Or perhaps an easy session of Pétanque is more to your taste.
